Ex Bellum, Literati - From War, Writing Scholarship

Many influential authors of science fiction and fantasy have been veterans of military service, experiences that profoundly shape the writer and their works. Lisa Alba Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors and commemorates Lisa Alba, who passed away in 2017. Lisa was a great friend and a great person. She was also a great lover of science fiction and fantasy. Thus the scholarship is awarded to an aspiring fantasy writer. Lisa's father, Terry Brooks, an admired and beloved fantasy writer himself, participates in selecting the recipient.

Delany-Kushner-Sherman/ The Future is Queer Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes the continued work of Samuel R. Delany, Ellen Kushner, and Delia Sherman as active LGBTQ writers in the field of science fiction and fantasy, and their contributions as Clarion faculty members who have been particularly supportive of LGBTQ students over the years. The scholarship provides financial support for Clarion students who self-identify as part of the broader queer community. In addition, it recognizes the need for more queer representation in speculative literature, and the many hardships queer writers face due to employment, home, and financial discrimination. Our hope is that the Delany-Kushner-Sherman scholarship will help more queer writers attend the Clarion Workshop.

Leonard Pung Memorial Scholarship

On September 3, 2012, the Clarion community lost much-loved member Leonard Pung, who attended the workshop in 2009 at the age of 47 while holding down two jobs. Leonard died from complications of leukemia.

Leonard's friend and Clarion classmate Ken Schneyer wrote the following tribute: "I met the generous and wry Leonard Pung at the Clarion Writers' Workshop at UCSD in 2009. He wrote stories full of yearning, but in real life was full of humor -- there was no context in which he would not utter the most outrageous pun he could think of. He was a kind but firm critic, a supportive friend, and a good man at a party. The warmth of his heart you could feel across a room; he loved people, and let them know it."

The bio section of Leonard's 2011 Clarion Write-a-Thon writer's page reads: "I am a proud alum of Clarion 2009, a life-changing experience for me. I have worked as a whitewater rafting guide for over fifteen years and a middle-school English teacher for over ten. I am currently preparing to move from the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada to Los Angeles, where I will be attending USC's Master of Professional Writing program. I am currently working on a near-future novel of post-peak-oil America."

The Clarion class of 2009 has established the Leonard Pung Memorial Scholarship as a tribute to Leonard's spirit, creativity, and courage. The annual scholarship will be awarded to a student who begins study at the Clarion Workshop after the age of 40. Because Leonard was only starting to live his dream when he passed away, his classmates created this scholarship in the hope that others may finish the journey he began.

CLARION NEWS

"Clarion consistently trains and turns out the sharpest, most talented, most wildly original voices in our field. Where lesser programs exert a normative pressure that forces all the work coming out of them to a kind of even keel of sameness, the Clarion workshop manages the nearly impossible trick of bringing out writers' individual voices, turning out vividly dreaming graduates whose work turns the field on its ear every five years or so."
