Clarion WorkshopsIt's not always easy to get feedback on science fiction and fantasy. Our genre has its own special challenges, and many mainstream writers simply don't understand them. Clarion offers two ways to workshop your science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories in progress.
The Clarion Workshop at UCSDDetails about the Clarion Workshop at UCSD are available on the Clarion UCSD web site. The site is designed to answer all your questions about the program, from the location and physical facilities, to the instructors, to the application process. If you have questions you can't find answers for, contact Clarion UCSD at info@clarion.ucsd.edu or contact the Clarion Foundation at info@theclarionfoundation.org. Please note that the Clarion Workshop is not affiliated with either Clarion West (in Seattle) or Clarion South (in Brisbane, Australia). Though they are modeled on Clarion, and although we think of them as our sister organizations, they were founded individually well after the original Clarion Workshop, formerly at MSU, now located at UCSD.
The Virtual Clarion WorkshopEstablished in 2006, the Virtual Clarion Workshop is the online version of the Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers' Workshop at UCSD. Operated and overseen by the Clarion Foundation and Clarion founder Kate Wilhelm, Virtual Clarion is designed for writers who find it impractical to attend the six-week UCSD program, as well as for Clarion alumni who wish to continue their writing education online. Though the Clarion experience can't be completely recreated online, our goal is to offer a high-quality substitute that operates on the Clarion model. Story critiques take place on the Clarion Circle message board and are led by Clarion instructors who have taught at the summer workshop, all of whom are seasoned professional writers and experienced teachers. The atmosphere is collegial, interactive, and educational. For further details and a sample critique, visit our Virtual Clarion pages.
